João Pinharanda, curator of the exhibition and Director of MAAT, invites museum visitors to a closer look at Ana Léon – Gestos.
An artist who first gained recognition in Portugal during the 1980s, Léon settled in Paris in the same decade, where she still lives today. Her practice moves between drawing and animated film. In this exhibition, spread across six consecutive rooms, the artist uses analogue technology (film and a Super 8 camera) to create stop-motion animations. Frame by frame, she reconstructs the movement of bodies, capturing their most mundane, everyday gestures.
