Art, City and Brain in Motion [Art, Neuroscience, Technology]

RAMIFICATIONS is the theme of the third edition of the MAAT Youth Collective, an active participation programme focusing on the links between art, neuroscience, technology and the city. The brain (thought), the city (urban space) and technology (digital environment) will be explored as territories for artistic and social experimentation.

Each meeting is an opportunity to open up new connections, test ideas, collaborate with professionals from different fields, and jointly build a path that reflects the voices and interests of the group.

In this edition, the sessions could give rise to research papers, publications or even exhibitions, based on the challenges developed throughout the year.

The MAAT Youth Collective is an active participation programme created in 2021/22, in partnership with ICS – University of Lisbon, as part of the research ‘Youth in Museums / Educational provision and professional training for youth in contemporary art museums,’ by Carolina Silva.

Since then, it has established itself as a space where young people, museums, artists and the city meet to think about and make culture.

Objectives

• To stimulate critical thinking and creativity through contemporary art;
• To promote the active participation of young people in the construction of a cultural programme;
• To expand contact networks with professionals in the arts, science and culture;
• To foster collaborative work and listening among peers;
• To explore relationships between the body, the city and the museum;
• To broaden knowledge of interdisciplinary practices and contemporary culture.

Audience: Young people aged 16 to 24
Language: Portuguese and English (part of the programme)
Capacity: Max. 20 people Min. 10 people).

Season 1 | September - December 2025 

Listening, experimenting, connecting

Dates: 24/09, 08/10, 22/10, 05/11, 19/11, 26/11, 15/12

The Ramifications of the first season will take place between the search to establish a web of connections between the points of interest of the young people taking part in this edition, in a logic of active listening, and exercises and provocations that stimulate the discovery of the various Selves present here. With a view to boosting interdisciplinary Ramifications and building bridges with art and MAAT's programming, this first season also includes workshops with partner organisations and guests that allow art to enter into dialogue with science, technology, architecture, cultural programming and experimentation with different languages.

Season 2 | January – June 2026 

Participatory governance

Dates: 07/01, 21/01, 04/02, 18/02, 04/03, 18/03, 15/04, 29/04, 13/05, 27/05, 03/06, 17/06, 24/06

This season, participants will take a more active role in defining the programme's direction. Based on the experiences of the first phase, a cycle of activities will be developed collectively, with room for authorial proposals, public projects, collaborative practices and research.

In a collaborative model, the directions of this second season are determined collectively, based on the possibilities of partnership and the disciplinary areas that, in relation to art, make the most sense for the Collective
